PG County Happenings: New School in Friendly Neighborhood of Ft. Washington

The Friendly community will be home to the new Southern K-8 Academy.

Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS) Chief Executive Officer Dr. Monica Goldson and the Prince George’s County Education & Community Partners (PGCECP) announced in January 2021, the creation of a $1 million endowed fund to support students and educators, along with student internships, mentoring opportunities and apprenticeships valued at $4.7 million, as part of the school system’s Alternative Construction Finance Program.
“The County Council welcomes this next critical step toward employing creative strategies to build six new schools in the County to meet the needs of our students and communities,” said Council Chair Calvin S. Hawkins II (At-Large). “ One of those six schools is Southern K-8 Academy. Southern K-8 Academy will be located at 12200 Fort Washington Rd, Fort Washington, MD 20744 and have an occupancy limit of 2000.
Construction is scheduled to start July 6, 2021 with a completion date of July 15, 2023.
